Appeals & Hearings

How do I appeal if I believe that my new assessment is incorrect?

First, consider whether your property could be sold for the assessed value.  If you believe that you could not sell your property for an amount reasonably equal to the 2008 assessment, you may wish to file an appeal.  Please note that the percentage of assessment change from one year to the next is not, by itself, a basis for appeal.

Second, use our AccoMap site to check the assessments of properties located in your general area that have physical features similar to your own property.  If they are not reasonably comparable, you may wish to file an appeal.

Who do I file an appeal with?

  1. You may also appeal to the Board of Equalization (BOE), a citizen Board that is set up to hear cases on real estate assessments.  Public notice of when the Board of Equalization will begin sitting to discharge its duties and details regarding making application will be published in the Eastern Shore News.

  2. You may also appeal to the Circuit Court of Accomack County.
