Mission Statement

The Department of Planning’s Mission is to provide land use planning and management services in order to protect the health, safety, and welfare of Accomack County residents, conserve natural resources, and improve the economy.

Services & Fees
  1. Planning Commission

Staffs monthly Planning Commission meetings and scheduled work sessions.

 

  1. Rezoning Applications

Reviews Rezoning applications and prepares staff reports for Planning Commission and Board of Supervisors review and action.

 

  1. Subdivision Applications

Reviews Subdivision applications with 10 or more lots or including a new road.

 

  1. Land Use Applications and Issues

Confers with land use applicants and their agents, County Administrator, County Supervisors, County Staff, State and Federal government representatives, and citizens regarding land use planning matters. 

 

  1. Chesapeake/Atlantic Preservation Area

The Chesapeake / Atlantic Preservation Area (CAPA) applies to the all of Accomack County, except for incorporated towns and Federal lands.  Areas shown on the CAPA Map are subject to the requirements of the CAPA Ordinance.  When reviewing development applications, Department of Planning staff conducts site visits to delineate or confirm the 100-foot vegetative buffer, prepares water quality impact assessments, considers buffer exceptions, and investigates buffer violations. The Department of Planning also maintains a Storm Water Management best management practices structure (BMP) database and administers the septic system pump-out notification program.  

  1. Erosion and Sedimentation Control

Prepares and issues Erosion and Sedimentation Control Permits, reviews Erosion and Sedimentation Control Plans, conducts Erosion and Sedimentation Control Site Inspections. 

 

  1. Comprehensive Plan and Land Use Ordinances

Maintains and updates Comprehensive Plan, Zoning Ordinance, Zoning Map, and Subdivision Ordinance.

 

  1. Agricultural and Forest Districts

Manages and maintains Agricultural and Forest District data and maps.  Staffs and coordinates Agricultural and Forestal District Advisory Committee

  1. Geographic Information System (GIS)
    Manages and maintains GIS data and prepares maps as needed.  Coordinates Accomack County GIS Committee.  Oversees AccoMap - Accomack County's Online Mapping Service.

  1. Green Infrastructure Study

    During 2009, the nonprofit Green Infrastructure Center (GIC), located in Charlottesville, will develop a study of Accomack County’s green infrastructure resources. Further information is available at http://gicinc.org/accomack.htm.
